Climate Action Plan

Implementing a climate action plan in schools brings a wide range of benefits—financial, educational, environmental, and operational.

1. Reduces Costs & Improves Operational Efficiency Schools consume large amounts of energy, and a climate action plan helps cut this consumption through measures like LED lighting, better insulation, and renewable energy adoption. This reduces utility costs and pressure on school budgets. A well‑structured plan also improves long‑term cost control by helping schools anticipate and mitigate rising energy prices and future sustainability regulations.

2. Improves Environmental Impact Climate action plans directly target reducing greenhouse gas emissions by setting clear decarbonisation goals and outlining steps to reach them. This includes actions such as: - Reducing waste - Improving energy efficiency - Switching to low‑carbon technologies - Encouraging sustainable procurement practices.

3. Strengthens School Resilience & Risk Management Climate action plans help schools prepare for climate‑related risks like flooding, overheating, or supply‑chain disruptions by embedding adaptation and risk assessments into planning. This makes schools safer, more robust, and better equipped to handle extreme weather or environmental threats.

4. Supports High‑Quality Education & Student Engagement Plans encourage integrating sustainability into the curriculum, helping students develop green skills and an understanding of environmental issues. They also inspire hands‑on learning through nature engagement, outdoor education, and participation in biodiversity projects such as the National Education Nature Park. This improves pupil wellbeing, fosters environmental stewardship, and enhances learning experiences.

5. Enhances Governance, Leadership & School Reputation A formal plan strengthens leadership accountability and provides a clear narrative that can be shared with governors, inspectors, parents, and the wider community. Schools with a plan demonstrate responsible use of public funds, forward‑thinking management, and commitment to national Net Zero goals—boosting trust and reputation.

 6. Helps Meet Legal & Policy Requirements All UK schools must have a climate action plan and a nominated sustainability lead by 2025 under the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. Implementing a plan ensures compliance and makes it easier to apply for grants, funding, and sustainability‑related support.

7. Builds a Cleaner, Healthier School Environment Climate action measures often lead to: - Better indoor air quality - Cleaner outdoor spaces - More green areas and biodiversity - Healthier transport options such as walking, cycling, or car‑free initiatives These improvements support both physical and mental wellbeing for pupils and staff.

Please see our Climate Action Plan below. We are starting small so that we can work towards obtainable and realistic targets, but plan to expand on this plan once the understanding and importance of the plan develops over the academic year with all school stakeholders.
