Roles and Responsibilities - School Business Manager (Jan Rixon)

I joined Curnow School as Business Manager in September 2014; I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to work at Curnow and have been made to feel very welcome. 

The role of Business Manager is quite diverse and that’s what I like about it – no two days are the same and there are many strands to the job.  

I’m responsible for ensuring the school’s finances are well managed and that all spending is appropriate and legitimate.  I passionately believe that our pupils should have access to the best possible facilities and resources which underpin personalised learning; I will be working closely with the Senior Leadership Team and, of course, Governors to maximise income generation and ensure that best value principals are followed. 

I also manage many areas relating to personnel including staff contracts, salaries, recruitment and maintaining records relating to staff training and development to ensure the school meets and continues to meet the training needs of the staff. I have overall responsibility for the management of the administrative team.

Other areas of responsibility include estate management; working alongside the site manager to ensure the school sites are fit for purpose and compliant with Health and Safety guidelines. I am currently involved in some exciting facility improvement projects, particularly with regard to the outside space at Curnow Upper School and planned refurbishment of classes.  Such negotiations are time-consuming but the transformation of our facilities will make it all worthwhile!

I’ve already started working with the Curnow School Association and am looking forward to getting involved with various PTA events in the future.  Whilst monies raised by PTAs are significant in providing the extra ‘nice to haves’ in schools, I feel that the community spirit, friendship and fun involved in organising, running and helping at  events are equally important aspects of a thriving PTA; this in turn underpins one of our aims within our school mission statement of ‘uniting parents and professionals’.   I hope to meet many parents and carers at PTA events in the future.
