We are an enthusiastic, inquisitive, friendly and lively Key Stage 2 class consisting of pupils aged between 7 and 11 years of age. We are supported by a dedicated and knowledgeable class team made up of two teachers; Sue Durrant (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays) and Caroline Jewell (Fridays), as well an experienced team of teaching assistants. The class team work very closely and co-operatively with a range of professionals who are either based at school or regularly visit. The team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech & Language Therapists, Dietician and Music Therapist regularly review and set individual therapy programmes and carry out 1:1 focused sessions with pupils as required.
We follow topics from the Key Stage 2 programmes of study from the National Curriculum. Each term alongside topic based activities, key signs and key vocabulary relevant to the topics are taught helping to develop and extend our Makaton signing and vocabulary. Each session and subject is fully differentiated and assessed using targets from the appropriate P levels, National Curriculum levels and MSI phases. Targets are personalised to meet the individual needs and potential of all learners at an achievable yet challenging level. Activities are varied, as is the environment and each are delivered through a multi-sensory 'hands on' approach, which is enjoyed by all. We work hard to promote as much independent learning as possible and for our Year 6 pupils we follow a carefully planned transition between Lower School and our Key Stage 3 classes in Upper School.
We love the challenge of learning and the experience of learning both in the classroom and beyond. We are really enjoying the experience of learning, practicing our skills and exploring the variety of environments that our wonderful school provides; sensory room, movement room, teaching kitchen, water skills pool, outside classroom verandas and the outdoor play areas. In addition, we also enjoy our learning experiences in the local and wider community. These currently include our weekly class riding sessions with the RDA at Chiverton Riding Stables and our swimming sessions at Carn Brea Leisure Centre. Getting out and about in the local environment, socialising and making new friends are activities that we all favour, benefit from and really, really enjoy!
