Class 8 - Fistral

Welcome to Fistral Class

Our Class:

Fistral Class is one of two Key Stage 3 classes at Curnow Upper School. We have a very dedicated staff team made up of one teacher, Dee Dockery and a team of teaching assistants. Class 8 is home to learners with high sensory needs and we work closely with parents and professionals to develop Sensory Passports to ensure our health and well-being is balanced so we can learn throughout the day.

Our Curriculum:

Our teaching is supported by a bespoke Key Stage 3 Curnow Curriculum that mirrors National Curriculum requirements. We use a termly topic based approach which incorporates lots of practical and sensory based tasks to allow our learners to become fully immersed in the topic across all areas of their learning.  We also enjoy learning through weekly music therapy and dance sessions which are tailored to meet our sensory needs. Supporting our curriculum we use our own bespoke assessment methods such as Individual Education Plan targets to ensure progress encompasses all areas of the child’s development (we work very closely with families when setting these targets to ensure they are the most relevant they can be and to make sure we can work consistently across all settings). Independence and effective communication are key areas we focus upon to prepare our learners as they transition through and beyond school.

Learning Environment:

We are very lucky here at Curnow to have variety of learning environments that provide quality spaces for children to undertake learning activities. Our classroom leads directly onto our customised outdoor leisure area that is fully equipped with all-weather musical instruments, sensory room and exercise equipment to support our sensory and physical needs. We enjoy a residential KS3 school camp every year where we have the opportunity to further develop key social, emotional and life skills. We use the outdoor learning areas as much as possible as we recognise the positive effects that being outside can have on the children’s wellbeing and engagement. We also have access to the school library, therapy room, hydro pool and newly developed school gym to further support our learning and development.
